Fleet 72 Annual Report for 2016

On September 10th, 2016 the annual Ensign Fleet 72 Regatta saw eleven boats enter the one day regatta. That Saturday morning we had a gentle breeze build from the south to about 4 knots which wasn’t ideal but after the previous year’s no-show we set out to complete two races. 1st race was a Olympic course and won by Team Keeling Time (530) with Tony Cannone, Fred Barker and Laura Rapport. The second was a I-1 course and was also won by Team Keeling Time with stiff competition from Team Sundance (557).

Once the breeze started falling off it was time to head in for lunch. The breeze must have gone in for lunch also because just as we were wrapping up lunch and contemplating the afternoon’s on-shore activities we noticed a nice breeze filling in so we prepared for our 3rd race of the day. Well the breeze just kept filling in and we ended up with 13 to 18+ knots. Team Sundance (557) Bruce Blackie, John Power & Nelson Snowden won. The fleet decided that the last race had beaten them up enough so they called it a day.

This year was special because we had a group of students from our sailing school compete with our commodore and school director, Mark Welcome as skipper aboard #123. The interesting thing about our fleet regatta is that we get fleet members teaming up on boats that don’t race regularly and the high fleet participation makes for a very fun day on the water and off!

Last July I reported progress being made toward the restoration of #23, Bruce Blackie and Dave Miller
undertook the project to correct the soft stern deck condition. The stern deck was removed from the boat and the rotted balsa wood core was taken out and replaced with closed cell 68 foam.The reconditioned stern deck was then reinstalled to the hull. They also refinished all the wood work and updated the control lines on this very early vintage Ensign, to bring it up to par with other Ensigns in Fleet 72. In May of 2015, Harold and Carol Klein of Plattsburgh, NY donated #23 to the Saratoga Sailing School, a program of the Saratoga Lake Sailing Club.The boat is utilized in the sailing instruction of both youth and adult and to introduce members of the community to sailing though the Town of Malta Global Foundaries Community Foundation.
