Boat stands
Author Last Post

Christine,

The keel supports almost all the weight. The stands just keep the boat from tipping.  I use 3 or 4 4x4 wood blocks under the keel.  You can also sue 6 x 6 blocks.

I use two power boat stands near the stern because the bottom is rather flat at the point. I then use two sailboat stands near the bow, where the hull is curved.   Some peolle also use a bow stand, but considering the weight of the Ensign keel, the bow stand does not seem to be necessary. I’m not sure of the height of the stands.  Stands can be purchased from any marine supply dealer such as West Marine, Defender, Discount Marine, etc. but the cost is about $120 each I think.   I have seen boat stands on Craig’s List for much lower prices, usually about $25 each.

I’ ve attached three photos of my first Ensign when the hull was being painted. What is NOT shown and is very important, are the chains that go under the boat and are used to connect each pair of boat stands so they do not shift. That chain can be seen in the 4th photo. If the boat stand does not have a hole for the chain, as this one does, wrap the cian around the post and secure it with a chain connector of the appropriate size: See 5th photo.

I looking for advice on buying boat stands for winter storage.  Please let me know if you have some recommendations on what size, how many, where to buy, and keel support.

Many thanks,
Christine

Bud,

Fleet 72 uses an independent boat hauler who has a hydraulic trailer.  He picks up our boats at the New York State boat ramp at the North end of Saratoga Lake, about 2 miles by water from our sailing club, then brings the boats back to the Club and places them on our stands.

Christine,

I find these a lot at boat yards:

https://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Brownell-Power-Boat-Stand-25-38-Range&i=349744&CAWELAID=120030620000075086&s_kwcid=adwords__&gclid=CjwKCAjw9sreBRBAEiwARroYm6BRKCc2T_4PaRjM_CLUG6UolxqyHm6nO2EVGNsDuXMomrm-O-bDJhoCHYcQAvD_BwE

They come in several heights depending on draft of the boat.

It's very important that both aft stands get chained together, as well as both forward stands being chained together (both athwartship), as you don't want the stands 'walking' away from each other in any winter high winds. Resting the keel on a block of wood to carry at least a load equal to each of the stands is the idea.

I'm wondering how you're going to get an Ensign out of the water and onto jack stands somewhere other than a boat yard.
