rudder painting
Author Last Post
Thanks for the advice- I’m in the process of waiting for the 3rd coat of penetrating epoxy to cure, then will apply the bottom paint.  I decided not to glass it as it appears that the epoxy will cover all of the minor blemishes and cracks. If it gets worse by the time I pull the boat out next fall, I’ll probably just upgrade to a new rudder altogether.  I appreciate the advice-so far, so good!
Doug ~ I would go on  line to Jamestown distributers in RI and order the penetrating epoxy from Total Boat that they offer. They will ship free any Total Boat product, They also have an 800 number helpline. I have used in the pass with great advise from them. The epoxy will soak into the wood and seal the rudder that then could be painted with bottom paint. Depending on the wood you could put a 4oz. glass layer over to totally waterproof the rudder

Hi all,

I have a wooden rudder that has a few bare spots- before I launch the boat this spring (strictly fresh water for now), I’d like to put some paint on it. I’m in Birmingham, AL, which is landlocked and at least a double-hunded miles from the nearest West Marine. Can anybody provide some decent alternatives to expensive Marine paint? And, do I need to use a primer first? Thanks all in advance.
