Coaming board refinishing

Thanks!

Rich

Another way to do it is to buy a wood workers plug making  drill. You would have to remove the coaming so you can steal a plug our of the back side where no one sees it.  Then drill the right size hole and plug it. Standard wood working stuff, sure you can see how on you tube.  Benifit you get a great color match as plug comes from the same board. If you varnish over it they last forever. If left bare and in the sun sometimes they get loose, but ensign used them in my teak floorboards and after 50 plus years most are still in place

Thank-you for the input. Most of these holes are small and I am beginning to think that I should just leave this as is and accept it for what it is. The boat is 375 and given the age the coaming boards are in reasonable shape.

I have never had luck matching color with this method the sawdust creates uneven absorption of any top coat or stain.I prefer using a small wood plug if the same or similar material.

You can do that for small holes maybe clean it out to good wood with a drill bit. I like to drill out and use a teak or mahogany plug or bung with epoxy. Line up the grain with the board and it will look like new or be ready for remounting some time later.

Hi,

I'm in the process of refinishing the coaming boards and want to patch a few old screw holes and some minor damage. I thought I read that adding clean saw dust to the West epoxy products is a good way of getting a reasonable match. Then I read elsewhere that there is a chemistry issue (separation in particular).

What have folks been doing? I appreciate the recommendations.
