Ensign News

August 2020 HYC Windjammer
By: Lythia Metzmeier

The “Spring” Series race was held in June, and two Ensigns competed in a distance match race that was won handily by Chasin’ Chickens (Robert Williams). A series of disastrous spinnaker fiascos by Dynamite (Lythia Metzmeier) would just not let us catch the Chicken! Congratulations Robert and crew for a great start and staying ahead … except for one little stretch near Morgan’s Point where Dynamite briefly took the lead.

Meanwhile, it has been a slow racing season for all of us, Ensigns included, but that doesn’t mean nothing has been happening.  This current hiatus has allowed for a lot of boat work!

Chasin’ Chickens has gotten new deck paint, thanks to help from Sandra Baldridge and Lythia - named “two blondes and a brush” by Robert.  That beautiful color is Pettit Hatteras White, and the roll and tip application technique can be viewed on You Tube.  That paint sets up really fast once the temperatures get in the 90’s, just saying!

Lady Hawk has had a makeover and is looking pretty Bristol after a trip to the Tom Meeh beauty parlor (AKA Waterline Works). Balvy Bhogal Chapman is admiring Lady Hawk's shiny finish.

Currently “the other woman” is receiving extensive salon treatment as well, both cosmetic (varnish) and safety related (chain plates, core bonding, stringers, floorboards, etc…like Dynamite’s last treatment$).   Above are the coaming boards getting new varnish in Joh Cutler's workshop/garage. Can’t wait to see the final results!

Carolina Girl is in the “boneyard” feeling lonesome as Jane Heron has been in Colorado tending to her new grandchild. CG is staying safe from potential storms until Jane returns in September.

Save the Date:

As of now, the HOOD Regatta is still on the calendar for September 18-20, and still planned as the Ensign Region IV Championship.  Some modifications to the Ensign NOR amendment will be made to assure social distancing and keep our sailors and race committee safe.  These will include using the blade instead of #1 headsail (spinnaker still allowed), allowing double-handed sailing, and no sail measurement will be scheduled unless a protest is lodged by another competitor.

Ensign News

August 2017 HYC Windjammer

By: John E. Cutler, Commodore Ensign Class Association

The “little big boat” Daysailer/Racer

The HYC Summer Series races were scheduled to begin on Saturday July 15. Unfortunately, the summer afternoon storms arrived that day and lowered the temperature from the 90s to the mid 70s. That was the good news.  The bad news was the rain, lightening strikes and stiff breeze from the east supported the Ensign racers (four boats) decision to not leave the harbor to race.  The second summer series races will be Saturday 29 July. I am looking forward to better weather conditions and to seeing 5 to 6 Ensigns on the windward/leeward race course.

Sitting in the Beachcomber after we decided not to race gave me some time to think about all of the Ensigns on pier 10, the ones that usually race, the ones that go daysailing periodically and the ones that never seem to leave their slips.

In a recent ECA Governing Committee meeting, Vince Morvillo gave the Committee some excellent guidelines for promoting and marketing the Ensign one-design sailboat.  His primary recommendation was to promote the Ensign as a family daysailor, a sailboat for novice sailors to learn to sail and a sailboat for families to enjoy being on the water together. In fact, there are many examples of where Ensigns have become “members” of the family to be kept in the family or passed down from generation to generation.  At HYC #1103, Ed and Marsha Bluestein’s Adjourn and #943, Laura and Daniel Dalgleish’s Ouija are examples of families’ long-time devotion and care for their Ensign.

The objectives of the Ensign Class Association are:

A.     To promote and develop Ensign class racing under uniform rules.

B.     To rigidly maintain the one-design features of the Ensign.

C.     To promote the use of the Ensign as a family boat for recreational sailing.

D.     To educate the public, and particularly the youth, in sailing and sailboat racing, with emphasis on safe boat handling and the use of the proper and necessary equipment for sailboats.

Granted, family sailing is third on the list, but in the Ensign brochure’s list of attributes, “recreational daysailer for up to seven people” is at the top of the list, followed by “competitive racer with skipper plus three crew, stable, full keel for smooth handling, large cockpit, and small cuddy cabin for sails and gear.” The August 2017 issue of Sail Magazine includes the Ensign in its article 100 years of Boats, A look at the evolution of one-design over the years.

In the article Adam Cort states, “In later years, as then radical fiberglass construction came to be more widely accepted, it was used to build such one-design keelboats as the drop-dead gorgeous S&S design Shields , and the immortal and virtually indestructible Carl Alberg-design Ensign, which remains the largest class of full-keel sailboats to this day(underlined added for emphasis). Again the hallmark of both of these and plenty others too numerous to mention is that they serve their owners equally well wiling away a lazy summer day as they do mixing it up on the race course.”

Ensigns were initially built by Pearson Yachts from 1962 – 1983. Thanks to the “virtually indestructible Carl Alberg design” there are over 1500 Ensign sailing out of the 1,775 built by Pearson Yachts. Ensign Spars, Inc. has built 34 new Ensigns since 2000.

So if you are looking for a safe, family friendly sailboat that you can daysail or race contact a HYC Ensign owner or visit the new Ensign class website –www.ensignclass.com and click on Buy an Ensign. There are currently three Ensigns for sale at HYC.  As an owner you will appreciate the classic design, ease of handling and comfort while sailing that the Ensign provides.  I enjoy racing my Ensign, but I also relish the time for a late afternoon sail on upper Galveston Bay or the annual Fleet 2’s 17-mile long cruise/fun race weekend to Double Bayou.

Fleet 2 Annual Report for 2016

Looking back at 2016, Ensign Fleet 2 had a very busy year on and off the water.  The Fleet competed in nearly 20 regattas on local and regional levels.  These regattas included major regattas sponsored by The Houston Yacht Club, members-only regattas and women's regattas.

Off the Water Fun:
Our annual  "in town" party was held at the beginning of the year at the bay home of Chris and Brad Larson (Lil Lade  #609) and hosted by Jane Heron (Carolina Girl #509) .  This is always an informal, fun event for the members and families to mix and mingle.  Later in year, just in time for the Rio Olympics, HYC sponsored the Amazing Olympics Games.  Daniel Dalgleish (Ouija #943) led the Ensign team which was awarded the bronze medal in swimming.

Windward Bound Sailing Camp for Women
:  Borrowed Ensigns are used to teach beginning level - Force 1 - sailing in this annual camp, now in its third decade.  Lythia Metzmeier (Dynamite # 519) oversaw Force 1 with assistance from Kay Snider and Megan Larson, while Laura Dalgleish assisted as a Force 2 counselor.  Little Oil, Carolina Girl and Dynamite were borrowed for camp.

Ensign Kid's Cup:
The Ensign Kid's Cup was held the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend with seven teams sailed by twenty-eight Ragnots and youth from local clubs.  This was a very well attended event.  A celebration and awards ceremony was held at the Beachcomber following the racing.   The winners were: 1st - Little Oil, 2nd - Dynamite, 3rd - the other woman and all participants received a medal.  Thanks to Rick Snell, Regatta Chair (Chianti #811), and the boat owners and boat representatives for making it happen.

HYC Club Championship:
One of HYC's club-only regattas is the Club Championship.  Each fleet within the Club sends a team to compete.   Laura Dalgleish represented Fleet 2 in the 2016 HYC Club Championship winning second place in a tie-breaker.

2016 Fleet Championship:  The Smith Family Trophy presented in 1963 by the Rufus G. Smith family is awarded each year to the winner of the Spinnaker Fleet Champion.  The Fleet 2 Champion is selected by the Racing Rules of Sailing low point system based upon participation in the Houston Yacht Club Regattas and each day in the HYC club races in the spring, summer and fall series.  The 2016 Season Fleet Champion awards were presented at the annual banquet held November 19th:

Fleet Champion – Smith Trophy*

*1st - Dean Snider, Little Oil 1724

2nd - Lythia Metzmeier, Dynamite 519
