insurance cost doubled!
Author Last Post

I don't know about liability only. I spoke with the rep, gave them the year, make and model and was swiftly declined.

They’re declining on liability?

Thought I’d update this with my recent quotes ($7k value, $250 ded, $300k liability):

US Boat/Geico and Progressive both declined to quote due to the age of the boat

Hagerty, who uses Markel: $173

Gowrie Group, who uses New Hampshire Insurance Company: $366

It's not just boat insurance. Many carriers have asked for enormous rate increases, justified by the vague excuse that the companies are "catching up" from the effects of COVID.

For years, the P&C and liability policy on my small business had been $300.00 a year through Chubb. This year the proposed premium was $905.00 even though I have never filed a claim. I shopped the policy and found coverage with State Farm for $285.00, so these jacked up rates are the product of claims experience, if they have any basis at all. If you are in the wrong risk pool, look out and don't be afraid to jump into anoother pool!

My boat insurance actually went down a bit this year.

I also insure through Allstate. In my case I have a separate policy with them and I believe it is $350 or right around there. It has not changed much from year to year so far. When I have had claims, fortunately over 10 years ago, they paid quickly.

Go Ensign Sailing!

I have chosen to “self-insure” the hull value of my boat, since I believe it is worth more than any surveyor would agree to anyway.  I keep it on a mooring designed for my former 30’ boat with a good cover to keep out the rain.

In terms of liability, (the most important reason to have insurance these days) I checked my homeowner’s policy from Allstate and found that the “watercraft clause” nicely covered the Ensign and any liability risks I might face.  I also carry a Personal Umbrella policy extending the liability limits on all of my policies which for about $40 more also extended the Watercraft Clause.

So if your numbers for a standard boat policy are getting unrealistic, consider an alternative route.

Yep - the same thing happened to me with the same insurance carrier. I got an explanation that all the boat losses in Florida hurricane caused them to raise rates. My lake in NYS doesnt get many hurricanes. I now pay $525 which is a double -- but I'm not sure if that is unreasonable compared to other companies. I have about $5,000 in boat loss plus liability.

Try Progressive - my 1963 ensign has been insured with them for years.

Greetings all,

Not sure if anybody else received their insurance quote for this season, but mine essentially Doubled!!

was paying a little over $200 to insure my Ensign with the Gowrie group One design program, who is now using New Hampshire Insurance Co. aka Risk Strategies Co.

They said that no one else is insuring old boats these days.

Can you tell me who you have this season and cost?
