Jack,

I’ll do that, but the project will not be started until early July because I will be out of town until the end of June.

Jim,

For the bilge pump issue, I was able to find an old, but unused, Rule 27D on eBay.  That clipped into the existing strainer bases in the bilge so I did not have to unscrew and replace the strainer base.

For the cabin drain hole issue.  I bought some thin wall (0.014 inch) 1/2 inch brass tubing. I will drill two holes through the aft wall of the cabin at the floor level and seal the brass tube to the wall with 3M 4200 adhesive at both ends.  That should provide better protection for the core of the cabin wall than trying to line the hole with epoxy.

Vic.  Un screw those bilge pump screws and see what's there for sealant. I recently helped a guy with his thru deck Spinnaker sheet blocks that our class builder installed in an older boat he brokered. To install the blocks meant the balsa cored deck had have a hole cut thru it. Proper procedure is to seal the balsa to keep it from getting wet. You can Google it and gets lots of info if your not familiar. Also the four bolts that had holes drilled did not have a countersink vee groove cut or any caulk. So if the class builder installed your bilge pump, I would not trust them to be properly sealed, even if they say they were. An inspection is the only way you will find out. As for drain holes in the cabin floor or wall, same principal applies, drill the holes your self and inspect.

These questions are predominately for Ensign Spars or Zeke, but I thought it would be useful to post them in the forum so others could benefit from the answers. (The same questions have been sent privately to Ensign Spars.)

First issue.  I need to replace the Rule Model 27D bilge pump in #2032. The new version of the pump, the 27DA, does not use the same strainer base. To use a 27DA I therefore have to unscrew the strainer base for the 27D and replace it with the strainer base for the 27DA.

My question is - are the four screws holding the strainer base for the 27D to the bottom of the bilge sealed?  If I remove those screws and I use the same screws and holes for the strainer base for the 27DA, do I need to seal those screws?

Second issue. I have water on the cabin floor after a heavy rain storm. I would like to drill two holes at floor level in the wall at the aft end of the cabin under the doorway so water can drain into the bilge.

Second question. Is the wall under the doorway made from plywood, balsa wood or plastic foam? If I drill two 1/2 inch holes at floor level horizontally through that wall, I assume they need to be sealed.  What should I use to seal the holes?  1/2 inch holes should be large enough to allow me to apply some epoxy to the inside of the holes. Would that be the best sealant?

Thanks,
